Migration statistics count and describe movements of people into and out of New Zealand (international migration), and within the country (internal migration).

Information releases

• International Travel and Migration
  This monthly release provides information on the number of overseas visitors, New Zealand resident travellers, and permanent and long-term migrants entering or leaving New Zealand. These statistics are based on final counts of arrivals to and departures from New Zealand.
• Longitudinal Immigration Survey: New Zealand (LisNZ) 
  This survey collected longitudinal data about how well migrants settle over their first three years as permanent residents in New Zealand.
• Survey of Dynamics and Motivations for Migration in New Zealand (DMM)
  This release investigates reasons for internal migration and provides insights into demographic characteristics of people who have moved or not moved, as well as satisfaction ratings for living conditions.

Reports and articles

• Internal migration and income change in the Survey of Family, Income and Employment (2010) 
  This report looks at short-term changes in average annual income experienced by people who moved into or out of the Auckland, Wellington, or Canterbury regions, and those who didn’t.
• International Travel and Migration articles
  A list of ad-hoc articles about international travel and migration.
• Internal Migration report
  This report provides a statistical overview of internal migration in New Zealand. It is based on information from the Census of Population and Dwellings and the Survey of Dynamics and Motivations for Migration in New Zealand.
• Census of Population and Dwellings
  This census captures information on people who have changed their usual address at least once since the previous census, or who were living overseas at the previous census, and information on overseas-born New Zealand residents.
