Agricultural Production Statistics: June 2011 (final)

Key facts

At 30 June 2011:

  • The dairy cattle number reached 6.2 million (260,000 more than in 2010).
  • The South Island dairy cattle number exceeded 2.2 million (36 percent of the national total). 
  • The number of sheep fell to 31.1 million (down 4 percent from 2010).
  • The planted area of wine grapes was up just 2 percent from the 2009 figure (to reach 34,060 hectares in 2011).
  • The kiwifruit area had a small drop of 2 percent from 2009 (down to 13,070 hectares in 2011). 

During the year ended 30 June 2011:

  • The number of lambs tailed was down to 25.0 million (down 11 percent from 2010).
  • The area of barley harvested increased 24 percent from 2010 (to 64,900 hectares).
  • The area of wheat harvested was down 4 percent from 2010 (to 52,600 hectares).

During the year ended 31 March 2011:

  • The harvested volume of exotic timber increased 14 percent.
